Aortic Valve Replacement Discussion

Dr. Longo will be speaking about TAVR (a leading edge approach to aortic valve replacement) on Thursday, February 16^th at 10:30AM at University House, Issaquah in the Gilman Auditorium. Dr. Longo is the Director of the Valve Clinic and Echocardiography at Virginia Mason Heart Institute.
 
Severe aortic valve stenosis is a narrowing of the valve leaflets with blood flow obstruction.  Patients can become very symptomatic and day to day tasks become more difficult.  Severe aortic stenosis is a life threatening disease.   This condition is primarily treated by replacing the valve during open-heart surgery.   TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) a procedure that replaces the diseased valve via a catheter that is guided through an artery all the way to the heart. The catheter and new valve are inserted through the diseased valve and the new valve is opened.  When opened is pushes the diseased valve leaflets aside leaving a newly functioning aortic valve.   Symptoms of aortic stenosis can include, chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness and/or fainting and difficulty while exercising.
